Hiking trail leading high above Massa Gorge on a path carved in stone, with spectacular views of Rhone Valley and the Valais Alps.
In order to divert the flow of water from streams to their fields, the inhabitants of Valais developed an ingenuous irrigation system generations and generations ago - the so-called Suonen. Today, these wooden channels, some of which run in dizzying heights and along exposed spots, are no longer needed in Valais thanks to modern irrigation systems, but fields in Nepal are still watered using similar canal systems to this day. With the help of information boards, the topic path shows similarities of the two irrigation systems and provides an interesting insight into the history, importance, construction and the expensive maintenance of the Suonen-systems. Along this path of medium difficulty, which takes you along the well-preserved Suone Riederi through the Massa Gorge, you also learn that customs and myths are associated with the Suonen.
This trail is accessible from mid-April to end of October –in any kind of weather- also from Ried-Mörel towards Blatten.
