Starting point of this snowshoe trail is the summit station of the Belalp cable car. The well-maintained route leads at first to Aletschbord and the historical Hotel Belalp. Here, snowshoe walkers can enjoy a mug of hot chocolate and the views of the Great Aletsch Glacier and the surrounding 4,000-metre peaks before tackling the ascent to Hohbiel. The mountain hotel opened in 1858, welcoming guests especially from the British Isles. These included the Irish mountaineer and scientist John Tyndall, who spent 44 summers at the Hotel Belalp. In his honour, the hotel maintains the Tyndall Room in its original condition. Some way above the hotel, snowshoe walkers pass a commemorative stone: the Tyndall Monument. The trail continues upwards following a rather demanding.

The descent to the Tyndall Monument follows the same route. From here, a highly scenic variant leads from the monument directly down to the Hotel Belalp, and then along the road back to the cable-car station.

Author’s recommendation

Stop for a bite or a drink at the historical Hotel Belalp, and enjoy the glorious views of the Great Aletsch Glacier and 4,000-metre Alpine peaks.

Turn-by-turn directions

Belalp cable-car summit station – Bruchegg – Tyndall monument – Hohbiel

From Blatten bei Naters, ride the cable car up to the Belalp summit station. Here, follow the road towards the Hotel Belalp. By the first stream (information panel), follow the road that leads half-left, diagonally uphill, between the new hotel building and the chairlift station. After about 200 metres, at the first junction, take the left turning, which leads to the footpath sign in view and onto the trail that climbs up towards the right to the Tyndall Monument. Here you join the trail up from the Hotel Belalp. The well-marked trail continues up to the chairlift summit station, where it turns horizontally to the right before once again turning uphill and climbing gently, without danger, along the ridge to the summit of the Hohbiel, at 3,021 metres above sea level.
