Returning to the church in Biberist, we walked through the town (first mentioned in 762) and out over the hill to the river Emme. On the way, we discovered a sign saying that if we heard shooting, we should take the lower path. We did neither. From the Emme, we could look back to Weissenstein, where we had crossed the hills in an earlier stage of the Baslerweg. There was a lot of work being carried out on the river banks to improve the flood protection, and we were detoured inland on several occasions. The Emme has been known for for some time for its sudden variations in water levels: Jeremias Gotthelf drew attention to this in his book The Water Crisis in the Emmen Valley in 1837. We passed by Landshut castle, famous for having its own moat and a museum of hunting, and paused for lunch in the castle park. From there we went past Kirchberg, famous for its motorway and shopping centre with IKEA, and Burgdorf finally came into sight, framed by the famous skyline of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.
