This is a popular, scenic hike across the forested back of the chain of lakes. The descent is through the cool Twann river gorge to the shores of Lake Biel (Take care in wet weather: slippery stone slabs!). Along the way, you will encounter the administration facilities of the Swiss Federal Office of Sport and the Twannberg Holiday Village Foundation building, both of which blend harmoniously into the landscape. Minimal hard-surfaced areas outside of townships.

This route passes through an inaccessible area and is therefore closed. Current information

Left bank of Lake Biel: Popular hiking trail

Even the ascent on the Biel–Magglingen funicular (access signposted from Biel train station) is an experience. It climbs 438 metres in only 7 minutes. From the top station in Magglingen, proceed westwards towards the administration building of the Swiss Federal Sports School. Every step of the walk along the former spa building pathway is a pleasure. The pleasant walk through the Nidau forest occasionally also offers views to the south. At the upper forest periphery of the Gaichtberg, you will cross the Gaichtstrasse and enter dense fir forest. On leaving the forest, your view will extend towards Lamboing, Diesse, to Mont Sujet and to the Chasseral. Heading in the same direction, cross the treeless plateau to arrive in the holiday village of Twannberg. Continue down the narrow roads to the signposted junction on the edge of the forest. The descent along "Le Muliweg", a cobbled cart track dating from the 13th century is interesting (but also slippery in wet weather). In Les Moulins, continue on the Tessenbergstrasse, below the restaurant, to the entrance of the Twann river gorge. The path through the increasingly narrow, damp and cool gorge is protected by barriers, some of which have been driven into the rock, and leads under mighty ledges (be careful in damp weather, danger of slipping!), while the stream bubbles through cracks, basins and hollows deep down. From the Känzeli vantage point at the gorge's exit, the route continues down a steep flight of steps and leads into the winegrowing village of Twann.
