On the Lake Biel shore path

Unique hike on the southern shore of Lake Biel. The view of the lake, which is famous for its beauty, is unusually rugged from the heights of the Hofmannsfluh. The charming little town of Erlach is reached on an excellently laid-out beach path. Hard surface only in the area of the settlements.

From Nidau station, cross the bridge to the Nidau-Büren canal and follow it seaward. The exceptionally beautiful lakeside path begins at the lake: diverse lakeside forest trees and bushes, reed beds, views of the opposite villages and the broad St. Peter's Island are fascinating as you walk through the Ipsach beach bottom. Now to the somewhat elevated church of Sutz. In Sutz-Lattrigen, on the grounds of the von Rütte estate, 200 m from the hiking trail is the diving base of the cantonal archaeologists for documenting the pile-dwelling finds on Lake Biel. A showcase provides information on the excavations.
The trail through the Mörigen Bay and through the beach bottom of Gerolfingen is particularly secluded. Along the edge of the forest, you reach the Hagneck electricity plant, an important landmark in terms of art history from the time of the correction of the Jura waters.
On a flat sandy shore - once the bottom of the lake - you continue along the reed belt to Lüscherz, where several prehistoric shore settlements were discovered at the time of the correction of the Jura waters. Now the landscape changes: over ditches and through old sunken paths you reach the steeply sloping Hofmannsfluh, from which an owner of the Obere Budlei (named Hofmann) is said to have plunged into the depths on horseback out of lovesickness. Wonderful views through the old pine trees to St. Peter's Island and the Chasseral. Via Vinelz and the excellently laid-out Strandweg (beach path) you reach the small town of Erlach.
