Varied, relaxing hike through alluvial forests and open country along the Alte Aare. Rich flora and fauna in the nature reserve. The jewels along the trail are the two traditional country towns of Aarberg and Büren a.A. with their historic buildings. At the beginning and end of the hike some hard surface, otherwise natural path throughout.

From Aarberg railway station past the town centre into the area of the Alte Aare (beginning of the nature reserve). Between Aarberg and Lyss there are signposted hiking trails on both sides of the quietly flowing water. The proposed route follows the eastern bank of the Alte Aare. Along a beautiful pond - the former clarification basin of the beet washing water of the Aarberg sugar factory in Grien - you reach the alluvial forest. The wilderness in the remaining untouched areas of the Alte Aare is exceptional: mighty bushes, small pine forest sections, interesting flora, water insects, beaver castles and a rich bird life delight the hikers. Near the Kappelen bridge, the peace and quiet ends: motorway and go-kart track noise severely detract from the nature experience.
The beautifully laid-out path to the outskirts of Lyss soon makes you forget the noise. Once again, the floodplain landscape is enchanting. At the turnoff to Busswil, follow the edge of the forest for a short time, then continue directly along the Alte Aare to Studen/Zoo.
From Dotzigen/Grien to Meienried/Grien, the alternation between varied tumbled landscape and unwooded sections with unobstructed views is delightful. You reach Büren a.A.

on a straight agricultural road.
