The Oberaletsch Hut, a massive stone house at the foot of the Fusshörner at 2640m above sea level, is located in the middle of the alpine glacier area of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch.

The ascent starts at the mountain station of the aerial tramway (2094 m.a.s.l.) and leads via Hotel Belalp and the Aletschbord to the alpine pastures of the Üsser Aletschji. Behind the crossing under the rugged rocks of the "Bord", the meltwater of the Oberaletsch glacier has dug deep into the rock.

The comfortable path, which leads over a moraine ridge, zigzags rapidly upwards and then leads into the valley high above the Oberaletsch glacier. It crosses several steep gullies, partly secured with ropes. The impressive scenery unfolds with a view of the Oberaletsch hut (2640 m.a.s.l.).

Safety information

Despite the " impossible to miss " markings of the hiking trails, we recommend for safety reasons to always have an appropriate hiking map with you, so that you can quickly find your way to a safe area in case of a thunderstorm or an emergency, for example.

Especially in autumn, you should also be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. After storms, trees can still fall over or branches can fall down. Especially in bad weather conditions, near-natural paths can become muddy and slippery. You have to expect this kind of path impairment when you go on a hike.

Not all rocks or precipices are secured with ropes or railings. In some cases surefootedness is required. If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not passable for you, you should avoid them.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hike starts at the mountain station of the cable car and leads you first on a wide path to the Hotel Belalp and the Aletschbord. Here follows the descent via the "Steigglen" into the "Üssers Aletschji". After a longer traverse under the rugged rocks of the "Bord", you climb against a rocky ridge. Then walk along the slope onto the southern, old moraine of the Oberaletsch glacier and continue along the path down into the impressive gorge, over the bridge and up onto the moraine ridge Lochegga. The trail leads you up the moraine to its end and then steeply up to approx. 2600 m. Via the Panorama Trail (built in 2005) you finally reach the hut.
