Canton of contrasts: Ticino

North and south, mountain and valley, culture and nature, town and country form a unity in their contrasts – this is exactly what makes Ticino so special. While the Sopraceneri, the northern part of Ticino, presents itself largely from its alpine side, the southern Sottoceneri, thanks to its mild climate and numerous hours of sunshine, is an almost paradisiacal lake landscape with sub-Mediterranean flora. The direct juxtaposition of high mountains, deep valleys and lovely lakes, the exciting contrast between barren, alpine mountain regions and southern regions, as well as the encounter of Italian lightness with Swiss precision are the reasons for the special charm of Ticino.

Outdoor activities in the region

It is precisely this diversity that makes the canton a hiker's paradise. Countless kilometres of hiking trails criss-cross the country. From the vibrant tourist centres on Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore, they lead hikers along winding paths through narrow valleys, past enchanted villages with magnificent works of art, churches and castles, up to hills and peaks with magnificent views. Often the ascent can be shortened by using public transport and cable cars.

After the hike, we recommend a stop at one of the typical grotti, where you can enjoy the regional cuisine with a glass of Nostrano. Locarno, Lugano and Ascona are among the most popular cultural destinations in the canton. In the towns, picturesque alleys and churches are waiting to be explored. An espresso on a lively piazza rounds off an eventful day in Ticino.
